Course Description

(3-0)3 Thermal problems in electric, electronic, and telecom components and systems. Overview of Fundamentals and Theory: conduction/radiation, natural and forced cooling by air, liquids, and by liquid evaporation, transient cooling. Thermal Characterization of Components: thermal resistance concept, junction temperatures, cooling and heating loads. Thermal Management of Outdoor Equipment: active, semi-active or passive cooling, solar loads. Overview of Numerical Solutions. Review and Evaluation of Thermal Management Equipment: heat sinks, heat pipes, micro-mechanical heat sinks, PCMs. Air Moving Devices: fans and blowers. Thermal Management of Indoor and Outdoor Telecom Systems. Thermal Measurements in Electronic/ Telecom Cooling Equipment.
