Course Description

Students will study engineering materials, focusing on their properties, processing techniques, and selection in design for modern application. Structure-property-processing relationships and their impact on engineering performance are discussed. Primary material families are discussed, including metals, polymers, ceramics, and hybrids. Experimental and computational characterization, and data analysis methods are covered. Topics include stress, strain, strength, stiffness, thermal expansion, hardness, tensile and bending tests, strain gages, corrosion, microstructure, and sustainability metrics.
