Course Description

Examines the role of science in European and American society through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The course explores the development of new scientific theories in the life sciences and the physical sciences (including evolution, relativity, quantum mechanics, and genetics), addresses the institutionalization of science in Western society, and considers how science came to be applied to various social, cultural, and military concerns of the modern world.
