Course Description
This course will explore the lives and work of groups of American artists and intellectuals with significant personal and/or professional ties to Boston. These individuals participated in a sea change in American intellectual and cultural history that followed the Civil War. It also will explore how cosmopolitanism affected many areas in the humanities: philosophy, literature, architecture, painting, and sculpture, as well as the institutions that supported these efforts, such as museums and libraries.
