Course Description
This course is an introduction to basic chemistry and chemical concepts using commonly abused, mind-altering drugs as a context. Geared toward students with little or no science background, topics will include periodic table of elements, states of matter, atomic structure, chemical bonding and a range of additional areas covering both organic and inorganic chemistry. The chemistry of mind -altering drug substances such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas), lithium, alcohol, cocaine, fentanyl, marijuana, ecstasy (MDMA), heroin, LSD, psilocoybin, methamphetamine and others will be presented. Some topics will touch on appropriate and responsible behavior with respect to legal and illegal drug use. This course includes a laboratory component involving demonstrations and hands-on exercises conducted in the classroom.
