With its beginnings in the 18th century, literature's horror genre is as unstoppable and as inescapable as its monsters — real or perceived, natural or supernatural, from external forces or within the mind, animate or inanimate. Its appeal is wide; its range is deep. Let's explore the prose from this evocative and intentionally terrifying subset of literature. Authors include classics such as Poe, Shelley, and Jacobs as well as the modern voices of King, Blatty and Landsdale, among others. ;
