Course Description
A survey course covering traditional and contemporary children's literature. Texts are selected to represent different historical periods and a diversity of authorial perspectives. Attention is given to changing views of children and childhood as reflected in selected texts.
Prerequisites, Notes & Instructor
- Section Notes: P: ENGL.1020. A survey of earliest through contemporary children's literature, this accelerated (10-week) online course examines 20th- and 21st-century picture books, intermediate and young adult fiction, book awards, children's poetry, multiculturalism and diversity in children's literature, folklore, and scholarship in this field. Many texts are self-selected; common reading includes E.B. White's Charlotte's Web, Wyeth's Something Beautiful, X.J. Kennedy's Knock at a Star, and Jane Yolen's Favorite Folktales from Around the World. We look in depth at issues of censorship, and at critical strategies for evaluating literature for children and young readers.;
