Course Description
This course introduces concepts of the properties and behavior of matter most important to health professionals, emphasizing content essential for upper-level courses and clinical practice. The course presents basic principles like the composition of matter; clinical measurements and units; the importance of water; aqueous solutions and concentrations used in the clinic, and how to perform dilutions; blood pressure, the behavior of gases, pulmonary gas exchange and blood gases, including arterial blood gases (ABG); atomic, ionic, and molecular bonding and structure; the mole concept, chemical reactions, energy, and rate; properties of dispersions, including osmosis and dialysis; acids, bases, and buffers; and the functions of biological structures.
