2024 ASL Honor Society Ceremony
Induction into the Alpha Sigma Lambda (ASL) Honor Society is no ordinary accomplishment. In fact, the GPA range for students inducted this year was between 3.835 and 4.000 - of which 32% had a perfect 4.000 GPA. It's an impressive achievement, and one worthy of celebration.
On Saturday, March 30, 2024, UMass Lowell held its 39th annual Alpha Sigma Lambda induction ceremony where the Division of Graduate, Online & Professional Studies inducted 145 adult students into the prestigious honor society - recognizing their remarkable academic achievements.
This year, inductees hailed from 20 states across the nation and from three countries internationally including Italy, Mongolia and Spain.
ASL History
The Gamma Delta Chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda is a national honor society for undergraduate Online & Professional
Studies students. The aim of Alpha Sigma Lambda is to recognize adult students who achieve academic
excellence in their course work while performing the many responsibilities associated with their
families and careers. Eligibility for membership requires that students rank in the top 20 percent
of all students who meet certain academic requirements. Selections for membership are made during
the Spring, and students who are invited to become members are inducted into the Society in April.
For UMass Lowell, having an ASL chapter serves as a way to inspire continued scholastic growth, recognize
students' dedication to excellence, and invite them to associate with similarly motivated students.
2024 Recipients of the Haskell Memorial Award for Distinguished Teaching
During the event, UMass Lowell also honored two faculty members for their teaching
excellence – presenting the 2024 Haskell Memorial Award for Distinguished
Teaching to the following recipients:
- Keith Mitchell
- John McAvoy
The Haskell Memorial Award for Distinguished Teaching was established in memory of William Haskell,
who taught at UMass Lowell for many years and was revered among students for his teaching.
Each year, the Division solicits nominations and selects faculty who personify the spirit and
teaching excellence of the award's namesake.
