Course Description

This course is an overview of the history of the first peoples of North America from pre-European contact to the present. The course will offer a general framework for understanding indigenous Americans and their historical experiences by exploring the forces of continuity and change that have shaped Native Americans' lives through time and space. This view will stress the ongoing presence of American Indian peoples and their efforts to preserve the integrity and viability of their dynamic, self-directed societies and cultures.
