Course Description

A survey of theatre in its historical and social contexts from the 19th century to the present, focusing on innovations in design and technology, the advent of the director, the emergence of modern schools of acting, and the creation of new forms of theatre to suit the changing needs of a modern world.

Prerequisites, Notes & Instructor

  • Section Notes: This course undertakes a survey of the history and theory of the world theatre and performance, from the 19th century to the present. Course participants will learn to identify theatrical forms and styles of performance across cultures and across centuries in order to become fluent in the theories and terminologies relevant for the critical analysis of theatrical performance. This exciting course reads a wide range of plays and explores the context and impact the play had on the period created. The course also discusses and explores how these works would affect present day theatrical community. ;
