Course Description
A course for aspiring creative writers among freshman and sophomores which offers an introduction to the craft of creative writing in its primary genres: poetry, fiction, drama, creative non-fiction (emphases will vary depending upon instructor). The focus of this course will be on learning the fundamentals of craft techniques and peer review.
Prerequisites, Notes & Instructor
- Prerequisites: ENGL.1020, or instructor permission
- Section Notes: P: ENGL.1020. By themselves, poetry, the essay, and fiction are each enough to fill a great deal more time than is available in one course. Even attempting to get a handle on one of these three would be an endeavor best measured in years and words written, not semesters. So, what will we be doing? In this course, conducted primarily in a workshop format, we'll be looking into all three. We'll talk about fundamentals of poetry, the possibilities of the essay, and the continuing, odd promise of fiction. We'll also look at a little of what's happening in each right now. Given our classroom readings, as well as your own interests and ambitions, you'll write in all three genres and be critiqued by your classmates and myself. You'll have the pleasure not only of writing towards whatever you already believe to be your strengths, but also the challenge of writing outside what you've done before — with a different map and for a different audience. Should be interesting; should be fun.;
