Course Description

This course is focused on theory-driven and research-based instructional practices for reading instruction and assessment. Preservice teachers will learn about the five pillars of reading, developmental relationship between oral language and literacy, and characteristics of effective literacy assessment and instruction. Students will develop familiarity with relevant, respective, and inclusive grade-level standards and curricula. Preservice teachers will demonstrate an understanding of how to develop and implement instructional and assessment practices that are rooted in supporting culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogies and anti-racist perspectives. There is a fieldwork component in this course.
