How to Apply for Financial Aid

To qualify for free aid (grants and scholarships) or borrow money to pay for college (student loans), you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

While grants and scholarships may only be applied toward the cost of tuition, federal financial assistance can be used to cover a wide array of costs while you are in school, including:

Tuition and fees
Print and digital textbooks

Lab and technology costs
Living expenses

Is the 2024-25 FAFSA simpler to complete?

Changes have been made to the 2024-2025 FAFSA with the goal of simplifying its completion and expanding access to financial aid for more students. You may be able to complete your 2024-2025 FAFSA application in under 10 minutes and answer as few as 18 questions. See FAFSA Simplification to learn more.
Am I eligible for financial aid?

Most students are eligible for some form of financial aid. You must be admitted into an eligible program and registered for at least two courses. Additionally, you must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or eligible non-citizen and have a social security number. Please see Eligibility Requirements for more information.
How do I qualify for financial aid?

To qualify for financial aid, you must complete the FASFA. Please see Applying for Financial Aid for more information.
Is financial aid available for summer courses?

Admitted and enrolled undergraduate students are eligible for scholarships through our division for summer courses. Please see Summer Aid Frequently Asked Questions for more information about summer financial aid.
How does financial aid work for graduate school students?

When you apply to a graduate program at UMass Lowell, you will automatically be considered for assistantships and fellowships. Graduate students may apply for Federal Student Loans and student employment opportunities.

Important Information for Anyone Receiving Financial Aid

You will be notified of your financial aid award via the Financial Aid Award Letter. Your initial award is based on part-time enrollment (6–8 credits). If your enrollment is other than part-time, you should notify our office. Revisions to your financial aid awards will be made at the end of the add/drop period.
