You can register for courses at UMass Lowell without being admitted into a degree program using the Non-Degree Registration Form. This is a good option if you wish to transfer credits from UMass Lowell to another college/university, you are looking to earn college credits to boost your GPA, or you just want to take classes for fun. As a newly-admitted student, you can register for courses in your SiS account (see Getting Started with SiS) or work with an advisor (recommended). Undergraduate students can schedule an appointment to speak with an advisor through our online scheduling system. Graduate students should reach out to their program coordinators directly.

I have been admitted into a program and already have an SiS account.

If you are a current UMass Lowell student, you should register for courses under the "enrollment" tab in your SiS account. For undergraduate students, we recommend that you speak with your academic advisor about your course selection each semester. You can schedule an advising appointment by using our online scheduling system. Graduate students should reach out to their program coordinators directly.

Step-by-Step Registration Guide

Visiting Non-Degree Students:

  1. Search for current courses.
  2. Find the course prefix/number/section for the course(s) you would like to enroll in.
  3. Non-degree students need a permission number to enroll in a course if:

    1. There is a prerequisite for the course and you have not taken the prerequisite.
    2. You are trying to register during the second week of classes.

    How do I get a permission number?

    1. To register for a course with a prerequisite that you have not met, that is not in the Manning School of Business, or to register for a course during the second week of classes, please contact the instructor to request a permission number. The instructor's name is listed on the course description.

      To look up the instructor's contact information, please use our directory. If the instructor's contact information is not listed, please contact the GPS Advising Center.

    Please note: permission numbers are given at the instructor's discretion.

    When I get a permission number, what do I do next?

    1. Once you obtain a permission number, please include it in the course information section on the Non-Degree Registration form.


  4. Use the online Non-Degree Registration Form to enroll in a course.
  5. Complete the form and submit it to the Office of Graduate, Online & Professional Studies by following the instructions on the form.
  6. When your form has been successfully submitted, you will receive a confirmation email.
  7. Within 24–48 hours, your registration will be processed and you will be enrolled in the course.
  8. You will receive an email on how to set up your UMass Lowell student email address and SiS account. You will need your UMass Lowell student email to log into your online courses in Blackboard. Please note that courses will not be available in Blackboard until the first day of the semester.
  9. To find out what course materials you need, please search for your courses at the UMass Lowell Bookstore.
  10. On the first day of classes, log into your course(s) on Blackboard.

Newly Admitted Students:

  1. Set up your UMass Lowell student email address and SiS account.
  2. Check in with your academic advisor to discuss your first semester. This is a great time to learn about degree requirements, what order to take your courses in and how to transfer credits that may count towards your degree.
  3. Register for courses with your advisor, through the website, through the Registrar’s Class Search page, or through your SiS account.
  4. To find out what course materials you need, please search for your courses and section at the UMass Lowell Bookstore.
