Apply for your UNIX/Linux Accounts

If you are enrolled in a Continuing Education course which requires a UNIX account, you can apply here for a UNIX account. Please note, you will receive the same account on both ce.uml.edu and cyberserver.uml.edu.

You will need to re-apply for an account each semester.

It can take 1-2 business days to process your information and set up your username and password. You will NOT receive anything by email. Try to log into your account at the end of the day that you apply (if you applied before 5pm).

How to Access with a Secure Shell Client

To comply with the University of Massachusetts Information Security Policy (Doc. T 10-089 passed by the Board of Trustees) and shield University resources from constant attack, the firewall policy will block all inbound secure shell access (SSH) connections at the campus gateway.

Therefore, to access the UNIX/Linux Machines, ce.uml.edu and cyberserver.uml.edu from a network outside of the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML), you will first need to establish an encrypted Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to the UML Network. Should you have questions on these directions or using the VPN, please contact the IT Service Desk at 978 934 4357.

Once the VPN client is installed, configured and started on your system, you will be able to use a Secure Shell (SSH) Client to connect to either ce.uml.edu or cyberserver.uml.edu.

Please note, that the university does not use Split Tunneling, with their VPN, so ALL traffic leaving your computer will be routed through the UML network. When you access the internet while the VPN is established, your connection speeds may be affected, you may have access issues connecting to some internet sites, you will lose connectivity to local network resources as printers and network storage, and some of your applications may not properly function. You should only use the VPN connection when you need to connect to ce.uml.edu or cyberserver.uml.edu.
